Perceptually-inspired enhancement of color images: a variational perspective

Abstract: « The seminar will be devoted to discuss a recently proposed variational framework, both in the spatial and in the wavelet domain, that can embed several existing perceptually-inspired color and contrast enhacement models. It will be shown that four basic human visual system features can be used to univocally select a class of energy functionals whose minimization induces color and contrast enhacement. The action of these functionals can be interpreted as an optimal balance among a local illumination-invariant contrast enhancement and an entropy-like adjustment to the average and point-wise radiance of the input image. Within this framework, new measures for the quantification of perceived contrast in natural images are proposed. Experimental results will be shown and discussed. »
