On continuum and kinetic approaches to mixture modeling

vendredi 17 juin 2022, 9h40 - 10h40

Salle de réunion, espace Turing

Dynamic behaviour of mixtures of gases and liquids may be described within different physical frameworks and at different levels of complexity. On one side, mixture theory is well developed within the continuum (macroscopic) approach, as well as within the kinetic (mesoscopic) theory. On the other side, the complexity of the model is usually reflected through the number of field variables which determine the state of the mixture. Aim of this talk is to give a brief overview of certain aspects of the mixture modeling. First, continuum models of mixtures will be presented along with the closure problem which arise in this approach. Second, a brief account will be given on the kinetic theory of mixtures and corresponding macroscopic equations derived in this context. Finally, some recent results will be presented, concerned with matching the two approaches and modeling of diffusion processes by means of Maxwell-Stefan equations.
