“ComplexCité” : Modeling of Complex Phenomena
Who are we? ComplexCité is an innovative and federative initiative that aims at bringing together the expertise at UPCité and associated partners, in the modeling of complex phenomena, from theoretical aspects to experimental explorations and multidisciplinary applications. ComplexCité has been designed as a large-scale transverse structure that intends to act as a cradle to promote and to support research and training related to the modeling of complex phenomena at UPCité, and in particular to initiate, stimulate and develop collaborations in those areas where interdisciplinary expertise, or a combination of theoretical (mathematical or computational) and experimental skills, are required.
The consortium of ComplexCité is a broad, diverse and multidisciplinary entity that combines about 150 tenured C/E-C from multiple groups across the University, from Mathematics and Fundamental Computer Science, to Physics and BioPhysics, Planet Earth and Medicine. As a whole, the consortium incorporates the large panel of complementary expertise that is needed to tackle complex phenomena, from conceptual aspects and modeling (including Analysis of PDEs, Probability and Stochastic Processes, (Bio-)Statistics and Data Sciences, Optimization and (Machine) Learning, Combinatorics and Graphs, and Statistical Physics) to empirical and observational proficiency (including Nonlinear Physics, (Geological) Fluid Mechanics, Infectious Diseases). The consortium involves members of the following research labs:
- the four research labs in Mathematics at UPCité: MAP5, LJLL, LPSM and IMJ-PRG;
- the lab devoted to Fundamental Computer Science: IRIF;
- two Physics labs: MSC, PMMH;
Within all the above “Faculté des Sciences”-affiliated labs, several groups are taking part in ComplexCité.
- two labs within the “Faculté Santé”: ECSTRRA, IAME;
- one group at Institut de Physique du Globe : Geological Fluid Dynamics;
- two labs at Institut Pasteur: MMMI, DCPP.
Call for applications 2025 : PhD positions (3 years)
ComplexCité offers 2 PhD positions in 2025 (more about the contract). Candidates must have a master’s degree or an equivalent diploma at the time of their enrolment (beginning of the PhD). They must not have been awarded a doctoral degree. The criteria for selection are scientific excellence and quality of the scientific project; the call also aims to promote applications that fit into an inter-team project of the ComplexCité consortium. The selection will be made by a jury made up of the Scientific Committee.
Note that it is mandatory to be already in contact with the proposed thesis advisor(s) who belong(s) to ComplexCité to apply.
- Deadlines:
- Opening: 1st April 2025
- Closure: 23rd May 2025
- Publication of the results: 6th June 2025
- How to apply: The applicants should send a single PDF file to complexcite-phd@mi.parisdescartes.fr. The file should include:
- Application form (to be downloaded here)
- Curriculum vitae
- Description of the scientific project (max.: 3 pages)
- Letter of recommendation from the proposed thesis advisor(s) who belong(s) to ComplexCité
- Complete track record of master studies (all grades available at the date of submission; master diploma if already obtained)

Call for applications 2025 : Postdoctoral positions (2 years)
ComplexCité offers 2 post-doctoral positions in 2025. Positions are open to holders of a doctorate in a field that is covered by ComplexCité. Laureates of this program must have defended their PhD thesis before the beginning of the post-doctoral contract. The criteria for selection are scientific excellence and quality of the scientific project; the call also aims to promote applications that fit into an inter-team project of the ComplexCité consortium. The selection will be made by a jury made up of the Scientific Committee.
Each post-doctoral fellow will sign a “Contrat de travail” and will benefit from health and welfare insurance. The salary depends on the
experience. For example, if experience is less than two years since the PhD has been obtained, the net salary will be approx. € 2500 per
month (€ 3250 before tax).
Note that it is mandatory to be already in contact with the postdoctoral supervisor(s) who belong(s) to ComplexCité to apply.
